TBT is Ross Emmett’s understanding of Tom Bowen’s basic technique as it was originally taught during the early Australian workshops in 1987/8. Ross has been in clinical practice for over 30 years using this technique and spent 8 years as a Senior Instructor of Bowen Therapy. He has been encouraged and supported in developing this course by Tom Bowen’s family and by the generous sharing of notes, advice and recollections by several of Tom’s later students, most notably Romney Smeeton, who was close to Tom until his death. Romney says of Ross:
“…he has an understanding and feeling for Tom Bowen’s work that I believe is far greater than anyone I have met, including those of us who actually watched Tom work.”
The course is taught over 6 days in three parts, each of two days in duration. The course fee is £340 for each two-day part.
What people are saying about the course
“As a Bowen therapist I have for some time felt that the increasing evolution of the technique, in many ways understandable and commendable, has tended to obscure the effectiveness of the work Tom Bowen did at the time. If Tom did indeed treat up to 13,000 people a year then his techniques must have had some merit for such a number to seek his help. Ross Emmett’s return to the original moves used by Tom, informed as they are by his deep understanding from his own work, feels intuitively correct. Tom Bowen’s Therapy does make me feel as if I am returning to the source and connecting with the man himself.” Bob Manning, Bowen and EMMETT therapist.
“I knew from seeing the manual that this course was going to be good, but it really blew me away! It has given me a much deeper understanding of work I have been doing for several years now and has allowed me to change the parts which didn’t work as well as they might for my clients. Best of all is seeing EMMETT-type results from doing Bowen Therapy!

Who is this course suitable for?
The TBT course is suitable for any one wishing to learn a simple way to relax and assess body tensions. Both experienced Bowen therapists and beginners are welcome to attend as each will gain new insights. This course is a CPD Bowen course and it will not result in you being a fully trained and qualified Bowen therapist.
What will I learn?
Part One
in this course you will learn the philosophy and principles of TBT101. In two days you will learn the sequence to relax and harmonize the whole body, specific points to loosen the hamstring, as well as to improve breathing and digestion, and points for babies with colic.
Part Two
You deepen the sequences learned in the basic course. You will learn solutions for tension, restricted movement and pain in the shoulder, knee, pelvis, jaw and sacrum, which improve stability, stimulate lymphatic drainage and contribute to the general well-being of the body.
Part Three
Previously learned sequences are deepened again and case studies are discussed. You will learn additional specific points to relieve tension in the neck, shoulders, jaw, sacrum, arms and feet to promote well-being and body balance, and how sequences of application can be used efficiently for headaches. How is the course assessed?
Students are supervised during practice sessions and extra assistance will be offered where required, so all students will become competent and confident with the moves. There is no final examination, nor will you be required to complete case studies. Classes are generally kept small so that the supervisor / student ratio is conducive to learning.
Will I be able to integrate my current therapy skills?
Current Bowen therapists will find it simple to incorporate this new learning into their Bowen treatment approach. New students to Bowen, will enjoy this system as a stand alone approach to relaxation.
Can I use the training days as Continued Professional Development (CPD)?
BTPA recognises TBT training as Bowen CPD.
If you take what you have learned of Bowen therapy and add what Ross Emmett can teach you, you have the most powerful therapeutic tool possible.
